3. Energy Drinks
Energy drinks often contain high levels of caffeine and stimulants such as taurine and guarana. These ingredients can cause your heart rate and blood pressure to spike, directly counteracting the vasodilatory effect of amlodipine. This can lead to unpredictable blood pressure control, increased palpitations, and heightened anxiety.
For individuals on amlodipine, consuming energy drinks may trigger symptoms like jitteriness or rapid heartbeat, making blood pressure management more challenging. Avoiding or severely limiting these beverages is advisable to maintain medication effectiveness.
4. NSAIDs
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen can cause your body to retain sodium and water, leading to increased blood volume. This fluid retention can raise blood pressure and reduce the blood pressure–lowering effects of amlodipine.
Additionally, NSAIDs may constrict blood vessels and impair kidney function, further complicating blood pressure control. If you need pain relief, consult your healthcare provider to find alternatives that do not interfere with your treatment.
5. High-Salt Foods
Excessive sodium intake causes your body to retain fluid, which increases blood volume and raises blood pressure. This effect can worsen swelling (edema) in your ankles and feet and counteract the benefits of amlodipine.
Common sources of high salt include canned soups, processed meats, frozen meals, and fast food. While completely eliminating salt is unnecessary, reducing intake and choosing fresh, unprocessed foods can help maintain stable blood pressure and reduce swelling.
