1. Identify silverfish presence

Silverfish are small, wingless insects about 12-19 millimeters long, characterized by their silvery-blue color and fish-like movements. They are nocturnal and tend to hide during the day, so you might notice them more often at night or in dimly lit areas. Key signs of silverfish presence include seeing the insects themselves or discovering their shed scales, small holes in paper or fabric, or yellowish stains on surfaces.

Because silverfish reproduce rapidly, detecting them early is crucial. You can try trapping them using jars baited with starchy food like oatmeal; the insects climb in attracted by the food but often cannot escape the smooth glass surface. Regular checks in bathrooms, basements, kitchens, and near bookshelves will help you confirm an infestation before it grows.

2. Understand their habitat

Silverfish thrive in damp, dark, and humid environments. They prefer temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and often inhabit bathrooms, basements, attics, and storage areas where moisture accumulates. Their diet includes carbohydrates such as paper, glue, starches, and even dead skin cells.

Common habitats include cracks and crevices around baseboards, behind wallpaper, under sinks, and inside cardboard boxes. Since they avoid light and dryness, reducing humidity and removing clutter can disrupt their preferred living conditions. Understanding where silverfish live in your home helps target control efforts effectively.
