These Strange Kidney Warning Signs Could Mean Your Kidneys Are Failing

3. Itchy skin

Persistent itching, medically known as uremic pruritus, is a distressing symptom associated with chronic kidney disease. When kidneys fail to filter waste products effectively, toxins accumulate in the blood, irritating nerve endings in the skin and triggering intense itching.

This is not the usual dry skin itch but can be severe enough to disrupt sleep and cause skin damage from scratching. The itch often worsens at night and may affect large areas of the body.

4. Frequent nighttime urination

Nephrologists often observe increased nocturia—waking multiple times during the night to urinate—as an early sign of declining kidney function. Impaired kidneys lose the ability to concentrate urine efficiently, producing larger volumes that prompt frequent bathroom visits.

This symptom may interfere with sleep quality and contribute to daytime fatigue. While occasional nocturia can be normal with age, multiple nightly episodes warrant assessment, especially if accompanied by other kidney-related symptoms.

5. Foamy urine

Foamy or bubbly urine can indicate proteinuria, where excess protein leaks into the urine due to damage in the glomerular filtration barrier of the kidneys. Healthy kidneys retain proteins, but injury or disease can create holes in this filter, allowing protein to pass.

Not all foam is pathological; vigorous urination can cause bubbles. However, persistent foamy urine, especially with swelling or fatigue, should prompt a urine albumin test or a 24-hour urine protein collection to evaluate kidney health.
