Did you know that eating tomatoes in the evening increases…See More

1. Storing whole tomatoes

Whole tomatoes maintain their best flavor and texture when stored at room temperature rather than in the refrigerator. Chilling whole tomatoes can cause their flesh to become mealy and diminish their natural sweetness. Ideally, keep them in a cool, shaded spot away from direct sunlight to preserve firmness and slow down ripening.

For longer storage, place whole tomatoes stem-side down on a countertop or in a single layer in a paper bag to avoid bruising. Avoid stacking or tightly packing them, as this encourages faster spoilage due to pressure and moisture buildup.

2. Storing sliced tomatoes

Once tomatoes are sliced, they start to deteriorate quickly because their protective skin is broken, exposing the inner flesh to air and bacteria. To slow this process, sliced tomatoes should be refrigerated promptly.

Place sliced tomatoes in an airtight container to minimize exposure to cold air and prevent them from absorbing odors from other foods. This also reduces the risk of bacterial contamination, which can cause spoilage and foodborne illness. However, even refrigerated, sliced tomatoes are best consumed within one to two days for optimal freshness and safety.
