1. Worsening chest pain or heart attack signs
Amlodipine is often prescribed to ease chest pain (angina) by improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure. However, in rare cases, it can unmask or worsen underlying heart conditions. If you experience increasing chest pain, pressure, or tightness—especially if it spreads to your jaw, neck, arms, or back—these could be signs of a heart attack.
Additional symptoms to watch for include:
- Sudden sweating
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea or vomiting
- Lightheadedness or sudden weakness
If any of these symptoms appear, seek emergency medical care immediately. Do not delay, as prompt treatment is critical for heart attacks.
2. Low blood pressure symptoms
Amlodipine lowers blood pressure by dilating blood vessels. While this helps reduce strain on the heart, it can sometimes cause blood pressure to drop too low (hypotension). Symptoms of low blood pressure include:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly
- Fainting or near-fainting episodes
- Blurred vision
- Fatigue or confusion
If you experience these signs, it is important to discuss them with your healthcare provider. They may need to adjust your dose or evaluate other contributing factors such as dehydration or other medications.
3. Allergic reactions
Though uncommon, allergic reactions to amlodipine can occur and require urgent attention. Signs of an allergy may include:
- Skin rash or hives
- Itching or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) are medical emergencies that need immediate treatment. If you notice any of these symptoms, call emergency services or go to the nearest emergency room without delay.
