10 Early Warning Signs of Breast Cancer You Should Never Ignore

1. Change in breast size or shape

A sudden or unexplained change in the size or shape of one breast can be an early indication of breast cancer. This change is particularly concerning if it affects only one breast, persists for more than two weeks, and is not related to hormonal fluctuations such as those caused by the menstrual cycle or pregnancy.

Such a change may occur because a tumor is growing inside the breast tissue, causing the breast to appear fuller, heavier, or firmer on one side. It can also distort the natural contour or position of the breast.

Tracking these changes over time can be helpful. Consider taking monthly photographs of your breasts in the same lighting and position to monitor any subtle differences.

2. Dimpling or skin texture changes

Skin dimpling or puckering on the breast surface that resembles the texture of an orange peel (known medically as peau d’orange) is a significant warning sign. This occurs when cancer cells block lymphatic vessels beneath the skin, pulling it inward and causing visible indentations.

To check for dimpling, try these steps in front of a mirror:

  • Stand with your arms relaxed at your sides and observe your breasts for any irregularities in skin texture.
  • Raise your arms overhead; this movement can reveal subtle changes in contour.
  • Press your hands firmly on your hips to flex chest muscles and tighten the skin.
  • Gently pinch the skin between your fingers to detect any areas that feel tethered or stuck.

New or worsening dimpling should prompt a prompt evaluation by a healthcare professional, as it may be associated with invasive breast cancer.
