3. Severe Leg Pain at Rest
Severe pain in the leg that occurs even while resting can indicate advanced peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition where arteries narrow and restrict blood flow. For women over 60, this symptom is particularly concerning as it signals critical circulation problems that may precede stroke.
This pain often feels like a deep burn or throbbing ache in the calf or foot and may worsen at night. Unlike typical muscle cramps, rest pain reflects tissue ischemia due to inadequate oxygen supply.
If you experience this symptom, especially if accompanied by other signs like skin color changes or ulcers, prompt vascular evaluation is necessary. Treatment may include medications, lifestyle modifications, or procedures to improve arterial blood flow.
4. Weakness in One Leg
Sudden weakness in one leg—where it feels limp, wobbly, or difficult to move—is a serious neurological sign that could herald a stroke. This unilateral weakness arises when blood flow to parts of the brain controlling leg movement is compromised.
Women over 60 should be vigilant for episodes of leg weakness, especially if it occurs with other symptoms such as numbness or difficulty speaking. The weakness might manifest as dragging the foot while walking or trouble standing from a seated position.
Immediate medical evaluation is crucial if unilateral leg weakness appears suddenly. Timely treatment can reduce stroke severity and improve recovery chances.
5. Numbness or Tingling Sensations
Numbness or tingling—often described as pins and needles—in the legs can signal transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) or mini-strokes. These sensations result from temporary disruptions in blood flow to nerves or brain regions responsible for leg sensation.
Unlike numbness caused by nerve compression or poor posture, ischemic numbness typically occurs suddenly and may affect only one leg. It can be accompanied by weakness or balance issues.
If these symptoms are recurrent or unexplained, consulting a neurologist is essential for proper diagnosis and preventive treatment to avoid a full stroke.
