3. Why it works
Baking soda’s effectiveness comes from two factors: its mild abrasive texture and its alkalinity. The gentle abrasiveness helps loosen the surface layer of the stain without scratching the plastic, while the alkaline nature neutralizes the acidic components of tomato-based sauces, making pigments easier to remove.
When combined with a small amount of water, baking soda forms a paste that can penetrate deep into the plastic’s pores. This paste breaks down pigment molecules and lifts them away from the container’s surface, enabling thorough stain removal without harsh scrubbing.
4. Application steps
- Rinse your stained container with warm water to clear away loose food particles.
- Sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda directly over the stained spots.
- If stains are deep, add a few drops of water to form a thick paste.
- Let the container sit undisturbed for the recommended time.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry with a clean towel.
No scrubbing is necessary; the baking soda does the work while you wait.
5. Timing for results
Allow the baking soda to sit on the stains for at least 15 to 30 minutes for effective pigment breakdown. For tougher, more ingrained stains, leaving the paste on for up to an hour can improve results.
This waiting period lets the baking soda penetrate and chemically react with the stains. You can continue your daily activities during this time without any extra effort.
