“Come with me,” Caleb said quietly, tugging my arm. The music from inside the wedding hall faded behind us as he led me toward the parking lot.
My heels clicked softly against the pavement in the cool night air. I glanced back at the glowing venue, where my daughter Rowan smiled in her wedding gown beside my ex-husband Arthur. I forced a smile for the guests, but inside, my stomach twisted into knots.
“What’s going on?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Caleb didn’t answer right away. Instead, he pulled out his phone and swiped through folders, his face tense.
“I waited until today because I needed all the facts,” he said finally. “I hired a private investigator. I just got the full report.”
I froze. “You did what?”
He looked at me steadily. “I didn’t trust Arthur. Something about him never sat right.”
My heart pounded. “What truth are you hiding from me?” I asked.
Caleb’s eyes didn’t waver. “There’s something you need to know about him. Something no one else does yet.”
That was the night everything changed—and nothing after it was the same.
