I learned something new today

1. What are age spots?

Age spots, also called liver spots or solar lentigines, are flat patches of pigmentation that appear on skin areas frequently exposed to sunlight. They commonly present as brown, gray, or black spots and are most prevalent in individuals over 50. However, younger people who have significant sun exposure can also develop them.

These spots form due to an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. The primary drivers behind this increased melanin production include cumulative ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, the natural aging process, and genetic factors. While age spots are benign, they can be a cosmetic concern for many.

2. How minerals affect skin health

Minerals are essential micronutrients that support various skin functions. They contribute to cell regeneration, help neutralize oxidative stress, and maintain the skin’s structural integrity. Without adequate mineral intake, the skin can become more susceptible to damage and premature aging.

Key minerals such as zinc, copper, and selenium are especially important. Zinc supports wound healing and inflammation control; copper assists in collagen synthesis; and selenium acts as a potent antioxidant protecting skin cells from free radical damage. Together, these minerals fortify the skin’s defense mechanisms and promote a healthier appearance.

3. Role of selenium in skin protection

Selenium is a trace mineral critical for protecting the skin against oxidative damage. It functions primarily as an antioxidant, neutralizing harmful free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental pollutants. This antioxidant activity helps prevent cellular damage that can lead to premature skin aging, including wrinkles and age spots.

Beyond its antioxidant properties, selenium supports immune system function and plays a role in thyroid hormone metabolism, both of which indirectly influence skin health. Selenium deficiency has been linked to increased vulnerability to UV-induced skin damage and may contribute to the formation of age spots through increased oxidative stress and melanin overproduction.
