1. Avoid Washing Immediately
Strawberries are highly perishable because of their delicate skin and high moisture content. Washing them before storage introduces moisture that accelerates mold growth and softening. Instead, keep strawberries dry until you are ready to eat or prepare them.
If you wash strawberries too early, the excess water creates a damp environment that promotes fungal spores to develop, leading to mushy texture and spoilage within a day or two.
2. Remove Stems Carefully
While it may seem logical to remove the green stems right away, itâs better to leave them on during storage. The stems help retain moisture inside the berry and protect the fruitâs integrity.
Only remove stems when you’re ready to eat or cook the strawberries. Removing them too soon can cause the berries to dry out and become soft faster.
3. Use Paper Towel Lining
Line your storage container with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel to absorb excess moisture. Moisture trapped at the bottom of containers often causes strawberries to rot quickly.
An absorbent lining helps wick away condensation and prevents the berries from sitting in dampness, which is key for keeping them firm and fresh longer.
