1. Use spin cycle with towel
To efficiently remove excess moisture from laundry without a dryer, use your washing machine’s spin cycle combined with a dry, thick bath towel. After completing the washing cycle, add a dry towel to the drum along with a small load of damp clothes. Run the spin cycle at the highest speed suitable for the fabric type. The towel acts like a moisture magnet, absorbing water squeezed out from the clothes, significantly reducing drying time.
This method works well because the towel’s absorbent fibers draw water away from the clothes during the high-speed spin, which extracts more moisture than spinning alone. It is especially useful for heavier fabrics that retain water, like towels and jeans.
Avoid overloading the drum; too many clothes reduce the spin cycle’s effectiveness and can strain the machine. Also, this technique should not be used with delicate fabrics such as wool or silk, as the vigorous spinning and friction with the towel might damage them.
- Use 1 dry, thick bath towel per small load of laundry.
- Set the spin speed according to fabric care labels, preferably the highest safe setting.
- Do not overload the washing machine drum to ensure effective moisture removal.
2. Proper drying placement
After using the spin cycle with a towel, the next step is to hang your clothes correctly to finish drying efficiently indoors. Hang laundry on a clothes horse or drying rack placed about 1 to 2 meters from a heat source such as a radiator or space heater. The warm air circulation speeds up evaporation without causing dampness buildup or mold growth.
Ensure the room is well ventilated, with some airflow to prevent moisture accumulation around the drying area. Avoid placing clothes directly on radiators or heating vents, as this can cause uneven drying, damage fabrics, or create fire hazards.
This setup is ideal during cold or rainy weather when outdoor drying is not feasible. It works best with synthetic and cotton fabrics but is less suitable for delicate or heavily textured items that require flat drying to maintain shape.
- Position drying racks indoors near but not on heat sources.
- Maintain good ventilation in the drying area to prevent mold.
- Avoid direct contact with radiators, vents, or open flames.
